Cervical Cancer
Cervical Cancer
What is it? How and why it happens?
Cervical cancer is a cancer of the cervix, a cylinder-shaped organ that links the vaginal canal to the uterus in females. Cervical cancer was the most common cancer in India until around 4-5 years ago, when it was surpassed by the number of new breast cancer cases discovered in India recently.
In Indian women, exposure to or infection with the Human Papillomavirus is a leading cause of cervical cancer. There are approximately 12 forms of Human Papilloma Viruses (HPVs) known to cause lethal changes in cervical cells, resulting in cancer growth. Sexual contact is the most common way for this infection to spread.
The following are the most common signs of cervical cancer –
- Vaginal bleeding that is unusual or unexpected- This pain may occur during periods, during or after sex or intercourse, or at any time after menopause.
- While having intercourse, you can experience pain or discomfort.
- Vaginal discharge that smells strange or foul.
- The area between the hip bones hurts (pelvis).
There are vaccines that protect against certain forms of Human Papilloma Viruses (HPVs) and, as a result, cervical cancer. For successful defence, these vaccines should only be given at a particular age. Girls between the ages of puberty and marriage should seek advice from gynaecologists or cancer specialists (oncologists) to obtain this defence by receiving a cervical cancer vaccine.
The secret to curing any cancer, including cervical cancer, is early detection. A simple screening procedure called a PAP smear test can be used to detect cervical cancer. A sample of cells from the cervix is extracted using a stick-like substance by a female doctor for examination and diagnosis. Females over the age of 25 should have a PAP smear test at least once a year. The PAP smear test is the most effective and cost-effective method of detecting cervical cancer. Many that have a positive PAP smear test will have confirmatory tests to determine the stage and grade of cervical cancer before surgery. The earlier the point, the better the treatment outcomes!
