Prostate Cancer
Prostate Cancer
What is it? How and why it happens?
Prostate cancer is a male-specific disease that, until recently, was predominantly found in men aged 60 to 65 years. Patients with prostate cancer in their 40s and 50s are becoming more common these days. Prostate cancer is described as the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of prostate cells. Fortunately, the biology of the prostate is such that prostate cancer growth and spread is a hormone-dependent entity that can be regulated. In other words, prostate cancer is aided in its growth by testosterone, a male hormone responsible for masculinity; thus, if the amount of testosterone in the body is regulated in any way, cancer can be controlled for a long time and patients can live a healthier life.
There are two ways to manipulate Testosterone levels in the body: extracting testicles (surgical castration), which generate testosterone in the body with the aid of the pituitary gland, or using drugs to suppress androgen receptors to avoid testosterone development (non surgical castration).
